The ice went out on my lake!!! YAAAYYYYY

Kinja'd!!!

But unfortunately, I have to make at least one repair on the boat before it goes back in. In the fall, pulling one of the drain plugs, it didn’t so much un-thread as “fall out in my hand in a pile of rust and corrosion.” It’s not a salt water boat, but I guess maybe this plug hadn’t really been out in a while, or ever. I was trying to be thorough. Now over the winter I purchased a new plug along with a proper thread tap, and have to put both to work (hoping I got the sizes right) before I have any hopes of the above image.

Also, to be fair, it’s still REALLY cold out on the lake. Even if it’s 65 on land, the water is still super cold and therefore the air around the lake is cold, especially with a breeze. So logically, I should wait. But man, I just really want to get out there.

Of course, I also have a long list of things I *should* do before launching the boat. This happens every fall, when I put the boat away; I create a “spring punchlist” of all the stuff I notice when winterizing. I diligently write it down and source parts so that come spring, I’m ready to rock and roll.

What actually happens is, we get a nice weekend and I say “f-it” and skip over ALL the non-essential items, and just launch the boat.

This is a recipe for trouble, though, because one of the things that made my last boat so reliable was my obsessive preventative maintenance. I intend to keep this boat up in the same way, because our time out there is precious. I can’t be spending hours tinkering with a run issue out in the middle of the lake on a Saturday when the kids are tired and hungry and the sun is setting. Nope, not doing that.

Two years ago I took a day off work and spent 6 hours straight doing punchlist things on the boat. I’ll probably have to do the same this year, based on my list.

Kinja'd!!!

Anyway, hopefully soon.

FYI the plug might be a 1/2" NPT pipe thread, so you wouldn’t want to run the tap all the way through - you have to leave a taper for the plug to seal against

Indeed, it is a taper. And I think it’s a 1/8npt, it’s a tiny plug on the v-drive. But yeah.

That generation of SAN is one of my favorites. Big wakes, and great looks. While everything else from that late 90s to early 2000s era looks super dated, the lines (and tower) on those still look great.

Our ice went out here in St Paul a week and a half ago. Got the dock and lifts in this weekend!

Unfortunately, the wake boat is still in storage about an hour away, so no surfing yet.....

That’s a good idea. A day off in decent weather, I just need to swap the plugs, change out the impeller, rebuild the fuel line.......

Nice! Indeed, I wanted one of these since I first saw one back in 1999. It took me 17 years to get one, but it was worth it lol. I might take the AIR graphics off the side, but otherwise it’s perfect. I was lucky, too, to get one with a not-white top deck.

If you’re bored and want to read more, I wrote about it a bunch when I first got it (linky)

There aren’t too many all black out there. There’s a guy who claims to have “the only all black 2003 SANTE” (super air nautique Team Edition) which, sure, maybe true. In any case I’d never want an all black boat. They sure do look cool though.

A friend had a black 1984 Ski that was all resto-modded and looked amazing... for a while. he didn’t take good enough care of it though, and it’s sitting collecting dust now. Still runs, but it needs a lot.

Now I’m trying to finagle getting my boat delivered to my house by my friend (no contact, just drop the trailer off) so I can do all that stuff in the little bits of free time I’ve got right now. It’s just crazy enough to work! Next week maybe.

Got the winter cover off and into the motor a bit yesterday. It was 70. Really wanted to put the summer covers on but snow is forecasted for this weekend. Batteries have a full charge though and I now what I need to hopefully get the priming issue resolved..

Summer is coming!

I love getting a boat ready for the summer. It’s really one of my favorite things.

Ugh, April snow. It always snows in April!

What is this priming issue you speak of? What’s the engine again?
